InGreat Expectations by Charles Dickens the main character of the story Pip struggles to cope with the several negative effects of love One of the challenges Pip is forced to face is helping a convict in the beginning of the novel by stealing food for and a file for him from his brother-in-law Joe Shortly after Pip learns that a woman Miss Havisham wants to see him play After he meets Miss Havisham Pip falls in love with her cruel but beautiful adopted daughter Estella Later Pip comes into the possession of a handsome sum of money an education in London and a secret benefactor who is later revealed as the convict from the graveyard Pip shortsightedly discards all connection he has with his simple life living with Joe and Biddy his close childhood friend in hopes for the superficial empty and unsatisfying life of a gentleman in London Because he is constantly trying to impress Estella who is heartless and will never return his love Pip struggles to keep up with his life in London and his friends and family back home Although Dickens includes multiple happily married characters inGreat Expectations he focuses the novel on the few love-torn characters and how their perception and search for right kind of love has negatively influenced their actions and choices in their livesDickens suggests that love causes characters to hate and act irrationally Orlick acts very recklessly when he attempts to seek revenge on Pip because Pip ruins his chance at falling in love with Biddy After luring Pip to a deserted sluice-house with a mysterious note Orlick ties him up and confesses in a drunken rant that he plans on killing Pip and disposing of the body like he intended do with Mrs Joe Orlick screams at Pip You was always in Old Orlicks way since you was a child You goes out of his way this present night Hell have no more of you
