Alas whoever knows the heart will guess how poor stupid helplessarrogant blundering more apt to destroy than to save is even the bestand profoundest love BW 409In 1882 Nietzsche was wandering through Italy alone when he received aletter from his friend Paul Ree recounting the discussions between Reeand a remarkable young Prussian woman Lou von Salome in RomeApparently Salomes views on God and Christianity were similar toNietzsches and she insisted that Nietzsche join them in Rome WhenNietzsche met Salome he was overwhelmed with her beautiful eyes andintellect when she read him a poem of hers he cried - her ideasabout life were so like his own At that moment he proposed to herwithout knowing that Ree had done the same Salome declined just as shehad to Ree and many others but Nietzsche continued to court her A fewmonths and many late philosophical discussions later he proposed againbut she scolded him as conventional it was Nietzsche after all whohad developed a philosophical defense of the superman the man aboveeveryday morality Eventually when Salome left Nietzsche for good hewas devastated As an antidote to his pain he wrote Thus SpakeZarathustra a book full of sublimated eroticism and deeply inspired byhis talks with her And so it was the woman that broke Nietzschesheart - the only woman he ever loved - was Lou Salome1Nietzsche uses a lot of big words that I dont understand so wheneverhe talks about women in some negative way I like to picture him sittingby himself in the corner of a dark run-down German bar pen in onehand a tall Jaegermeister in the other scribbling furiously about thecruelty of women He raises his glass in a toast - To Dionysus Ohthat cruel seductionist Lou SalomeThe image is comical but it illustrates a larger point Nietzsche was adeeply emotional guy not that theres anything wrong with that Infact that is largely Nietzsches point that reason and truth cannotexplain everything and missing from Western culture
