Concerned with widespread condemnation of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 NCLB the authors offered insight as to how to mend the unintended consequences of the law particularly its requirement for school accountability The NCLB was enacted into law by the Bush Administration as a comprehensive piece of legislation designed to introduce school accountability and educational equity The policy thrust of the law was based on setting measurable academic goals that could result in individual outcome improvement The authors ideas for modifying the policy enunciated in this article were based on their experiences as individuals who had worked on the Texas education reform which served as model for the NCLB First they suggested emphasizing standards rather than standardizations p 6 They pointed to the inherent differences in strength interest and gift of all children and suggested the development of the differences to create pathways that support individual learning and achievement The goal must be to help students meet rigorous curricular standards not to ensure that every student has a standard educational experience p7 The authors called for increased funding for public schools low teacherpupil ratios early childhood education and high-quality professional development programs for school personnel They argued for the adoption of authentic assessment which require students to demonstrate their achievement through application of understandings and skills to real problems in real-world contextual settings Finally they stressed the need to shift attention for accountability from the individual to the system levels because the responsibility for ensuring a high-quality education rested on the system p8While the suggestions are practicable and realistic the authors failed to address evidences of disparate outcomes which might indicate that some students were not being served well by schools For instance most schools in urban centers and districts largely populated by the minorities are known to perform poorly because of inadequate infrastructures and high studentsteacher ratio This ostensibly is what the NCLB is meant to address And addressing
