There have been many studies conducted in nursing homes that have made a substantial impact on the nursing community These studies are organized to inform readers on ways to care for dementia patients I currently work with dementia patients as a CNA and before reading several articles that consisted of these studies I wondered why people with dementia act the way they do Quality care for persons experiencing dementia The significance of relational ethics focuses on challenges and understanding the patients emotional and bodily expressions Though it is difficult to work with dementia patients they need to be treated as people and not as a case or a disease Dementia patients needs the best care possible at all points of their lives but especially at the end of their lives Dementia patients are challenging to care for but giving quality care can affect patients lives in a positive way because it can increase their lives I currently work with dementia patients and I usually listen to them only when they are screaming or crying to try to understand what is wrong with them Following reading about Russell and Timmons study I started to listen to the patients even when they werent upset People with dementia usually talk in fragments but if you listen clearly and patiently a patient may tell one something important that can help with caring for them Improving quality of care does not have to be physical it could just be listening to the patient talk In addition when dementia patients are combative I assume along with other medical staff that there is a behavioral problem but no one should just assume that there is a behavioral problem going on Nurses need to assess for pain when a patient is being combative screaming and all around difficult to work with Assessing for pain rather than handling a behavior problem can have a great impact on the nursing community because more patients
