There are many ethical issues related to nursing in the novel MySisters Keeper by Jodi Picoult The role of the nurse is to providenursing diagnosis to help the patient and the people involved Thenurses role is also to promote the patients well-being and state ofmind In this paper an explanation of the patients diagnosis will bereviewed some of the ethical issues will be presented a care plan willbe created for one of the characters and some of the nursing roles andresponsibilities will be evaluatedThe characters in the novel are the parents Brian and Sara and theirtwo children Kate and Jesse When Kate was a few years old she wasdiagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia a blood and bone marrowcancer Brian and Sara decided to have another child named Anna to bea donor for Kate as she struggles through the cancerHowever when Anna turns thirteen she decides that she no longer wantsto be a donor for her sister and wants to be medically emancipated fromher parents this means that she wants to make her own health decisionsand her parents cannot make them for her At this same time one ofKates kidneys is failing and she needs a kidney donation and Anna doesnot want to be her sisters kidney donor To do this she hired a judgeand they try to argue her way through the case of being medicallyemancipated from her parents even though her parents still want her tobe a donor for her sister Picoult 2004 Throughout the novel Anna istrying to win the rights to her body and her parents are trying to getAnna to donate her kidney to her sister KateAs noted above acute promyelocytic leukemia is a blood and bone marrowcancer In normal bone marrow blood cells are formed and released intothe blood to perform their duties such as protecting the body frominfection transporting oxygen and blood clotting abilities In acutepromyelocytic leukemia white blood cells called myelocytes are releasedtoo early into the blood stream
