Obesity has become a widespread health issue for the past few decades Obesity which is regarded as having excess amount of body fat can easily lead to cardiovascular risks and shorter mortality As obesity continually grows as a severe health impact the interest in green tea and its health benefits has captured much scientific attention Much accumulated scientific evidence has proved to support the traditional notion that green tea can eliminate fat and contribute to weight loss1 Green tea contains a rich source of polyphenols a type of antioxidant found in our diets that helps protect the bodys tissues against oxidative stress and cancer1 These polyphenol compounds contain catechin an organic compound found in green tea extracts that can be linked to slight reductions in body weight and pronounced decrease in visceral fat body fat surrounding the inner organs1 Epigallocatechin-3-Gallate EGCG the most abundant catechin found in green tea helps stimulate fat oxidation a bodys way of breaking down molecules that it can use for energy therefore increasing exercise capacity and contributing to fat loss observed in response to these compounds2 Does green tea extract help reduce weight Green tea extract has been linked to decrease body fat increase fat oxidation and decrease body weight A randomized double blinded controlled metabolic study was conducted with a Japanese population that was considered to be visceral fat-type obese to clarify the body-fat reducing effects of a green tea extract high in catechins 3 The subjects were separated into a control group and a catechin group each having 135 participants During this two week run-in period and twelve week treatment period both groups were given a test beverage that was to be consumed daily The control group consumed a test beverage containing 100 milligrams of catechin and 70 milligrams of caffeine in 340 milliliters of green tea while the catechin group consumed a test beverage containing 600 milligrams of catechin and 70 milligrams of caffeine in
