Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is an anxiety disorder in which people have unwanted and repeated thoughts feelings ideas obsessions or compulsions that are so strong they must act on them It is estimated that approximately two percent of the population will be diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder in their lifetime Many others suffer from obsessions and compulsions that they do not seek treatment for or remain undiagnosed For those with OCD their thoughts and actions actually interfere with their daily functioning and their relationships with others Most people with OCD know that their obsessions and compulsions make no sense but they cannot ignore or stop them However people with obsessive-compulsive disorder can adapt to everyday life by taking medication prescribed by their doctor sticking to daily routines and by attending behavior therapy There are many different symptoms of OCD Most people who have these symptoms often experience both obsessions and compulsions Although in some rare cases people experience one of the other OCD symptoms usually get worse with stress Some common obsession thoughts are fear of being contaminated by germs fear of causing harm to yourself or others fear of losing or not having things you might need and making sure everything lines up just right A few usual compulsive behaviors include double checking things cleaning or washing a lot accumulating items that you do not need anymore and ordering evening out or arranging things These OCD symptoms may go away and come back over time Everyones OCD experience is different There are also many different types of OCD The five distinct types are contamination obsessions with washingcleaning compulsions harm obsessions with checking compulsions obsessions without visible compulsions symmetry obsessions with ordering or arranging compulsions and hoarding If you experience washing-cleaning compulsions you will usually feel uncomfortable with contamination Checking Compulsions could cause you to have thoughts relating to things that could harm you or others Compulsions that arent visible are usually related to sexual
