In the novel The Old Man and the Sea there are many characters that go through obstacles but I think the most persevering character was the old man Santiago He made it though so many obstacles throughout the book and after each obstacle his persistence grew even stronger Santiago showed others that working hard for what you want pays off Out of all of his obstacles Santiago encounters some of his major ones included the fierce marlin the ferocious man-eating sharks and his own tragic loneliness These obstacles had many effects on the character of the old man but mostly exposed to readers how strong-willed and determined he wasSantiagos first extreme struggle was the aggressive violent marlin The marlin was a huge component of this novel mostly for the fact that it exhibited Santiagos hard work He searched for the enormous fish throughout the book and never gave up even when there might have been a chance that he wouldnt find the marlin he still looked He put his heart and soul into finding this fish to prove to the other fishermen that he wasnt just an old man who they could laugh at or pity When he accomplished his goal of catching the marlin he not only over came the obstacle but proved to everyone and himself that he was persevering and determined to accomplish anything he sets his mind toSantiagos second struggle was the sharks When the sharks appeared and began attacking and eating his catch the marlin he felt that something needed to be done He strikes and kills many sharks when they began attacking the marlin He was very upset wishing that the marlin wasnt dead but he still needed to kill his biggest obstacle the sharks On several of the sharks he used a club a knife and a harpoon He defeated all of the sharks that dared to cross his path attempting to eat the meat off of his
