In all aspects of society differences are spotted far quicker than similarities Differences include the color of ones skin religion ethnicity or simply ones accent Yet people are reluctant to move past these differences and many have to strive and work pasts the differences to become successful Racial and religious differences as well as obstacles cannot hold a person back if he has the motivation to succeed as Ruth James and their family show in The Color of WaterRuth is a prime example of a person that had to work hard to work past her differences time and time again to achieve her goals Ruth grew up in Suffolk Virginia in a town full of predominantly Christians and grew up on the Black side of town where her fathers store was Many kids in school called her Christ killer and Jew Baby McBride 40 She was also treated horribly by her father who pushed labor on to her and also molested her occasionally Anytime he had a chance hed try to get close to me or crawl into bed with me and molest me 42 Ruth first overcame religious obstacle when she became friends a young Christen girl named Frances She knew my home life wasnt perfect but Frances wasnt the type to question She was just a giving kind person 155 Later Ruth ran away from Suffolk and went to New York to get away from her troubles and live the life she wanted to live After some time of getting mixed up with odd characters Ruth meets Dennis McBride and falls in love and eventually marries Dennis We got the license and Rev Brown married us in his private office at the church 236 The fast that Ruth married a black man was really Ruths first true test in overcoming racial discrimination Ruth and Dennis were greatly tested in the times to come yet they never even spent a night apart The two
