The novel A Separate Peace by John Knowles is told by a man named Gene revisiting his former school Devon fifteen years later As Gene explores his school he reminisces his days there this leads to the memory of his best friend Phineas Although Gene and Phineas were best friends Knowles shows them to be opposites in many ways throughout the novel Finny and Gene are opposites in numerous ways such as their skills their leadership ability and how they perceive the worldGene and Finny contrast each other in their skills Gene is a better student while Finny is a better athlete Gene remarks how Finny is without question the best athlete in the school but he himself is the best student Gene again describes Finny as an extraordinary athlete Finnys athletic skill is shown by the number of award he has such as Winslow Galbrath Memorial Football Trophy The Margaret Duke Bonaventura ribbon and prize and the Devon School Contact Sport Award Finny tells Gene that he was aiming to participate in the Olympics confirming that his goals are rooted in athletics While finny is a better athlete gene excels in school This is demonstrated when Gene said that his goal is to be valedictorian Its also evident in how Gene always wants to study rather than go to the club meetings the beach or anywhere else Gene is always working towards being a better student These boys skills differ from each other tremendously Finny and Gene are different in the way that Finny is a leader while Gene is a follower Finny is constantly leading Gene to do things such as to the suicide society meeting Gene doesnt want to go but he follows Finny anyway Another example is when Finny was the first to jump from the tree Gene followed him Also when finny creates the game blitz ball he throws the ball at Gene and tells him to run gene immediately
