I am proud to say that I am the first born US citizen and member in my family to be finishing a degree in college Around the time of the Iranian revolution my parents fled from their country Iran as refugees for a chance at a better life in America In Iran they had no chance of attending college because of the chaos and war that had erupted in the country during their lives When they moved to America they both worked together to support themselves and me and my brother by working hard in multiple jobs My family has taught me to work to the best of my ability and never give up hope when I cannot reach something the first time They have given me the motivation that I need to be able to succeed in life I am very determined to do my best to get into optometry school so that I can reach my passion and be the great vision provider that I always wanted to be I feel blessed to have had a college education in America My parents were not lucky to have an education like mine in their country because of the war and revolution that took place Also in their hometown education was something that was more for the wealthy and women rarely went to school Education is a valuable quality to have and without it there are many things a person cannot do My grandfather back in Iran had glaucoma for years and never knew about it due to a lack of education The people around him did not understand that he needed to visit a doctor when he had signs of impaired vision Unfortunately he experienced vision loss that led to blindness and this left my family devastated Back in the city where my grandfather lived people were not aware of the different eye diseases and assumed that old age had to come with vision
