As we left the boathouse the last time before our big race we were all filled with excitement nervousness and determination to do our best over the next two days of racing My boat the Varsity 4 was in its prime We had been practicing every day for the past several months for this race The rowers and I had reached our peak performance After a huge win at the City Championships we were the favorites to win the Stotesbury Cup the biggest high school regatta in the country As the evening progressed thoughts of the next day filled my head I was excited but anxious and couldnt fall asleep I thought about my team and how my fellow rowers were all probably in bed sleeping at this point and that I should get some rest too As that thought passed I received a random text from one of the girls on our team All she wrote was Jimmy Confused and a little bit worried I quickly responded Did she want to wish me good luck go over race plans or was something wrong I had a thought in the back of my mind that something really bad had happened as much as I tried to push it away it stayed there Imagine trying to submerge a buoyant object no matter how you try to push it under the surface or try to keep it there it will eventually resurface My fear that something bad had happened refused to remain submerged After hours of sitting by my phone and computer I got the call that Paul our boats bowman had died in a fatal car accident In shock I sat there crying in disbelief I thought I was living a bad dream and that I would wake up the next morning and everything would be ok that Paul had lost his phone or had gone to bed
