The goal of this pilot project is to compare exposure and inhaled doses of commuters who changed travel behavior before and after a new light rail transit service This study will complement and leverage a multi-year longitudinal study of the new Expo light rail investment in South Los Angeles Expo study hereafter Expo study investigated the impact of light rail on travel behavior physical activity vehicle miles traveled VMT and greenhouse gas GHGs emissions Based on the already-obtained 7-day travel and physical activity data from the 284 longitudinal samples our goal is to compare the before-and-after exposure levels and inhaled doses of commuters who changed their travel modes from car to railTo fulfill our research goal we have two specific objectives Our first objective is to measure and compare black carbon BC exposure by following reproduced travel patterns of commuters who changed travel behavior from Expo study One of our team members will carry a portable BC device following the representative travel routes Black carbon is the pollutant of choice because it has significant health impact and the black carbon monitoring device is portable and expandable for large-scale exposure assessment later Our second objective is to compare the inhaled doses of commuters before and after they switched mode We propose to use the already-obtained accelerometer data to calculate energy expenditure and estimate inhaled doses using the standard EPA algorithm Bicyclists and pedestrians are typically found to have greater inhaled doses than other travelers hence increased pollutant intake However it is also possible that rail commuters have greater inhaled doses than car commuters because of their typically rushed journey to and from stations Our expected outcomes are as follows Commuters who switch modes from car to rail will have lower in-cabin exposure However high variability in background ambient concentrations will complicate our analysis for assessing the total exposure levels for light rail commuters We expect that commuters who live in high density urban environment and walk
