Nothing is more inspiring than watching a person overcome extreme hardships A camp counselor I met two years ago is still inspiring to me today It was my first time at summer camp and I was paired with Elizabeth Elizabeth just finished high school She was working the camp as her summer job to make money before she started college To everyone she seemed like an average college student but I got the opportunity to hear her story A story that to this day still inspires me When Elizabeth was thirteen years old she was placed in the foster care system Her mother abandoned her just after her birth Her father became a severe alcoholic because of the stress associated with raising and thirteen year old daughter The first family Elizabeth was placed with cared for three other children Each of their kids was under the age of ten which left Elizabeth as the permanent babysitter The family took care of her until her shortly after her fourteenth birthday They claimed they could no longer afford to raise another child so Elizabeth was placed in a new home This family had no children of their own and seemed perfectly fitting for Elizabeth After six months in the house the father abused Elizabeth She was removed from the home and was placed with her third family during the trial She grew very attached to her new family because they treated her as if she were their own child After several stressful months of testimonies and court dates Elizabeths abuser was sent to jail The third family made the choice to permanently adopt Elizabeth right before she started high school She never let her troubles distract her from her grades or community work The next four years of Elizabeths life were spent helping everyone she could She began to volunteer at after school programs to help children in foster care She made it her mission to be
