Nothing is more threatening to the future of our world and the people that inhabit it than overpopulation Overpopulation is the major cause of continuing ecological damage growing insecurity and is the main reason why sustainable development remains beyond our reach According to Worldviews there are over six billion people living on our planet and could reach up to over nine billion before stabilizing Boorse The world is already reaching its population limits and the choices being made by humans are making those limits approach even faster A study was done on the use of the Earths natural resources ecological footprint and the conclusions showed that with the high demands of these resources we would need 15 Earths to maintain our current consumption Kuo Something must change action must take place There are a few ways the world can fix this problem or it is going to fix itself with tragedy becoming inevitableThe United States considers itself the leading country in terms of prosperity yet has been reluctant to reduce its population knowing that an environmental crisis is to be expected The United States needs to be the one to get the ball rolling and set the example We are being hypocritical by chastising other nations for environmental destruction and high birth rates but we are the ones omitting the most harmful emissions In 1999 North America excluding Mexico was emitting 264 percent of the global fossil fuel emissions It doesnt seem right that a country with only 5 percent of the worlds population consumes over 40 percent of its resources Cassils We are aware of this problem yet we are reluctant to fix it because that means changing our daily lifestyles that we have become so familiar with But in order for change the 1United States needs to be the leader by getting rid of our wasteful ways to get the rest
