Shang dynasty 1750-1122 defeated the Xia dynasty This dynasty is where the earliest written records of Chinas have been discovered These records were inscribed on the bones and shells of animals these bone are called the oracle bones The oracle bones have ancient scriptures on them they used for divination as well as medicine By Shang time many city-states had emerged in Northern China many of their ruler were tied by an alliance of kinship to the Shang royal family Shang society was strategies into several classes At the top were the king and his warrior nobles below them were the artisans next are the peasants and at the bottom are the slave During this time the artisans devoted their time perfecting bronze tools for ritualistic purposes and military basis while the Shang kings and nobles held positions of high power and prestige During this dynasty the people of China were polytheists which meant they worshipped multiple gods but the most common religion of the Shang dynasty was ancestor worship Ancestor worship is based on belief that the spirit of the dead can aid their relative by influencing the gods This worship involved ritual performances at graves and shrines to honor the dead kinfolks By the late 12th century BCE the Shang king become corrupt and oppressive The Shang dynasty was defeated by Wu ruler of Zhou Wu started a new dynasty the Zhou dynasty that lasted more than 800 years The Zhou dynasty connected much of northern China extending is rule through the yellow river The Zhou era is divided into two periods western Zhou and eastern Zhou King Wu brother the legendary Duke of Zhou took over after kingWu died in 1116 BCE mainly because the new king Wu son was too young to rule on his own Duke of Zhou was a solidified
