The three readings I chose to help with my thesis are Solving the Disability Problem Whose Responsibility by Tom Shakespeare Genetics Disability and Ethics Could Applied Technologies Lead to a New Eugenics by Kelly Dahlgren Childress and The Awful Privacy of Baby Doe by Nat Hentoff They all explain the criticism of why the worries of people with disabilities about the way in which prenatal screening is handled in our culture can be answered These prenatal screening doesnt make any sense because even though it tells you that your unborn child would be disabled or not it doesnt necessarily tells you to what extreme your child disability will be For instance there are different types of disabilities in life there is mild moderate and severe The prenatal screening couldnt detect that Therefore the parents worries couldnt be answeredIn the reading by Tom Shakespeare it talks about how technology can detect if anything will be wrong with an unborn child Such malformations include Down syndrome and spina bifida It went from the unknown of an unborn childs condition to knowing the condition of the unborn Most of these conditions are untreatable and incurable and therefore give the parents the choice of having the baby or not According to Sulston in this reading he believed that one shouldnt give birth to a child that will be diagnosed as disabled In other words he believed by the mother having an abortion that by the mother having an abortion they would eliminate the suffering the baby would have if detected with malformations during the pregnancy Even though he believed all this he also respected the fact that it was by parents choice Tom Shakespeare believes that the majority of people have the same risks of having a disabled child Shakespeare says that Sulstons comments are relevant for couples who are deaf and restricted by height Disability rights campaigners believe the
