Prior to the year 1920 women essentially had no access to or place in the public realm They had no right to vote own property or have legal custody over their children Their roles were completely defined by the men in their life be it their father or husband who they had no legal right to divorce They were systematically kept complacent in these roles because they had no access to higher education professional training or professions in which they were paid a fair salary The womens movement at the time was centered around these issues and with the ratification of the 19th Amendment they had won their first big battle in their fights against patriarchy The hope was that political changes like this would be symbolic of societal changes that would value women as individuals and as a strong force against male domination of all institutions Feminist Reader In the decades that followed women gained more access to the public realm and were given more choice in their lives but were faced with constrained choices because their roles were still tied to and defined by the dominance of man Many women worked but typically only part-time as secretaries saleswomen and other occupations that supplemented the work that men were rewarded for Most women were not seeking a career and remained in the home happily caring for their children and husband achieving what Betty Friedman called true feminine fulfillment Yet she also noted another phenomenon occurring in which many women were actually not happy with their circumstances despite the culture and society of the time telling them that they should appreciate the new opportunities afforded them and that being a being the homemaker was the new ideal Many women were left unsatisfied in their role but because of there isolation from other women they had no way of conceptualizing what they felt Finding no external reason for their despair many women internalized and assumed
