Eleanor of Aquitaine born in 1122 in Bordeaux France and died at the abbey of Fontevrault France on April 1 1204 was one of the most powerful women in Western Europe during the High Middle Ages Eleanor the daughter of William X of Aquitaine and Aenor of Chatellerault would become the queen of England and the queen of France at two different times in the 12th century and had large and extensive impressions on the doings of Europe during her lifetime In 1137 Eleanors father died at a young age After the death of her father French king Louis VI was appointed by her father to become her guardian When it became time for Eleanor to be married King Louis VI appointed his own son Louis VIII to become Eleanors husband Eleanor and Louis VIII were married on July 25th 1137 in the cathedral of Saint Andre at Bordeaux After his marriage Louis VIII was named his fathers successor One month after the wedding the king died and Eleanor became the next queen of France During the Second Crusade her relationship with King Louis suffered and in 1152 the couple became divorced Shortly afterward Eleanor married Henry of Anjou who in two years became become King of England The royal couple gave birth to eight children Eleanor and Henry had five sons and three daughtersAt the royal court at Poitiers Eleanor dedicated much of her immense wealth and prestige toward the support of rising artists in all areas Though she is best known for her promotion of troubadours singing poets and of writers on the art of courtly love and of romances the newly favored literary genre which gradually replaced the martial epics of the early Middle Ages Important works in history and legend were also composed under the patronages of Queen Eleanor Eleanor not only read and listened to such legends but likewise encouraged the composition of romances about her
