The Progressive era marked a time of transition to better lives for Americans It was a time when people initiated movements to try to improve their working conditions as well as their living standards for themselves and others However in an attempt to expand their economic and political rights they restricted some of the freedoms that had already been established One of the major complaints citizens had during the Progressive era was that the big businesses had too much power and they were very corrupt with their power Many felt that it was unjust for business to be overworking their workers without increasing their pay especially with the deteriorating working conditions that led to many injuries and deaths on the job This was partly due to the rapidly increasing population numbers as people poured into America looking for better opportunities The areas of Americas that saw the greatest influx of people were the cities The United States counted twenty-one cities whose population exceeded one hundred thousand in 1910 the largest being New York with 47 million residents Also Manhattan Island was home to over two million people more than lived in thirty-three of the other states Foner 675 The massive amounts of people moving into the area made jobs harder to find especially good paying jobs This increased the poor class as there was no way for the poor to make money and become successful Some families were so desperate for money that they sent their children in to work for wages In fact more than two million children under the age of fifteen worked for wages Foner 676 With the amounts of people fighting for jobs and with jobs becoming more and more scarce economic freedoms were severely limited In attempts to better their economic freedoms workers tried to start strikes against the big business arguing that they were not treated or paid properly They attempted to create labor unions where they could rally
