Kathleen Grove states A friend is someone who reaches for your hand but touches your heart Friendship is a bond between true friends which stays long and strong forever Friends are people who cherish the special moments and memories of life with another person or a trustworthy companion The relationship of friendship takes time to build In the novel Passing by Nella Larsen we find glimpses of the relationship between two childhood best friends Irene Redfield and Clare Kendry We also find opposition regarding race sexuality and class under the identity of realization It is centered on one of the characters Clare Kendry She is a light-skinned biracial woman living as a white woman in a primarily black community She has married a white man who knows nothing of her race and thus enjoys all the social comforts of being white On the other hand Irene Redfield is Clares childhood best friend and although she is also light-skinned in color she has chosen to remain within the African American community This book is separated into three parts the encounter the re-encounter and the finale This novel is written in third person yet Irenes character is the only one with first person narration Irene seems to be the narrator even though the marking term of I is not used a lot during the book In addition this book has no definite ending therefore I will explain the ending in detail to understand the instant death of the character Clare Kendry from the final section As mentioned due to the lack of a definite ending in the novel I declare that there are three theories which can be used to explain Clare Kendrys death firstly death by pure accident secondly murder by her childhood friend third her death could be a suicide attempt Therefore based on the evidence which I have collect from the novel Passing it is possible to conclude that Clare Kendrys death has occurred
