Timeless characters in literature all show something enigmatic about human nature In the influential Russian Novel A Hero of Our Time written by Mikhail Lermontov the main character Pechorin is a unique example of how some people are detestable and enthralling at the same time Pechorin is the archetypal Byronic Hero a protagonist whose handsomeness intellect cynicism arrogance and cunning makes him magnetically alluring to others but to himself self-deprecating and emotionally destructive Mikhail Lermontov insightfully recognized this paradox and to set up an ironic critique of humanity uses vivid figurative language and contrasts Pechorins unscrupulous and charismatic nature with minor characters to paint Pechorin as a manipulative intelligent and shrewd young man Pechorin is an emotionally manipulative deviant who takes advantage of woman to appease his perpetual boredom In Princess Mary he weaves a depressive story together to beguile a woman He lugubriously details his colorless youth imagery that portrays Pechorins childhood as bleak and lifeless Lermontov uses this portrait of an unloved child to explain Pechorins deceptive behavior such as when he describes how he got to know well the fashionable word and the mechanism of society 119 Lermontov uses this metaphor to show how Pechorin abuses and analyzes society treating it as a machine that calculates and computes the same commands Lermontov also uses a strong sense of irony throughout the passage Pechorin openly admits his manipulative inclinations to gain Marys sympathy and take advantage of hera technique deliberately used by Lermontov to draw emphasis to Pechorins behavior Through the usage of these literary devices Lermontov reveals the observant and insightful nature of Pechorin qualities that grant him a superior intelligence which he uses to con others Additionally Pechorin criticizes his victim as being too emotional noting how compassion had sunk its claws into her inexperienced heart 120 By connoting compassion with animalistic and visceral qualities Lermontov reveals Pechorins hatred towards emotion and accentuates his mechanical and logical outlook on life
