At 9pm seated in JFKs terminal 4 eating my Shake Shack burger Iwondered what was ahead of me My daydreaming went only so far as toconsider my seat on the plane and my dorm at the university I had noidea what I was truly in for I was excited for an adventure - to seethe third world and broaden my horizons Its safe to say I had zeroexpectations of what I would encounter in Ghanas education systemAfter returning to the US I still feel unsettled - not because I wasdisturbed but because I had never seen anything like it before I grew up in Connecticut To this day I have attended a total of threeprivate schools I spent 13 years at one school - from kindergarten tosenior year I chose a specific university to attend to escape thehomogeneity of my hometown I thought that I would automatically becomea cultured citizen because of the diversity around me Clearly whatI needed more was a better definition of diversity because asBachman-Turner Overdrive would say I aint seen nothin yet Acaveat I feel I must provide is that I have such a limited scope ofclassrooms everywhere - I have seen a greater variety of classroomdynamics in Ghana than in the US So I will try to refrain from using mypersonal experiences as biases in stereotyping American education Ghana has thrown me for a loop Even after being home for a week I havetrouble understanding fully what I saw and heard It is easy to describethe city and its people and provide good anecdotes for my family andfriends But when my good friend from high school asked me about theschools we visited I struggled to provide an adequate description Ifound myself describing the architecture of the schools After dozens of scribbled notes and thrice underlined questions andstars I cant say Ive come up with an answer as to why I had suchwriters block However I can say what surprised
