Virtual reality is a computer-simulator that may be a valuable tool for decreasing pain and reducing anxiety for children having medical procedures A computer simulator allows the children to interact with the computer patients can visualize imaginary environments and this distraction could lead to less painful medical procedures To determine the effectiveness of virtual reality researchers performed a study that included twelve boys and eight girls ages ranging from 7-17 years old The participants filled out questioners children were physically cognitively screened and separated into two groups One group used the virtual reality method with topical anesthetic while undergoing MRI or CT scan that required intravenous placement and the second group only used topical anesthetic After the procedure several surveys were completed to obtain verification of the effectiveness of virtual reality Participants surveys included patient satisfaction a decrease in anxiety and pain in children In addition the participants in virtual reality group did not experience any side effects after the procedureThe study provided evidence that virtual reality with topical anesthetic clearly demonstrates that pain and anxiety decreased during intravenous placement The children were distracted more focused in the world of reality instead of their current surroundings This group was preoccupied in playing games that the children did not anticipate or notice when the needle was about to be inserted into the skin which relieved stress and anxiety and decreasing pain The controlled group that only used topical anesthetic without distraction did notice an increase in pain and anxietyIn conclusion virtual reality a computer simulator could be an important tool for decreasing pain and reducing anxiety for children having medical procedures The data collected during the experiments confirmed that the participants were distracted using virtual reality method during a medical procedure which therefore decreasing the level of anxiety stress and made the pain more tolerable This article is very interesting because virtual reality could be
