Teens all over the world have to deal with peer pressure and individualism in their schools They have to deal with drugs sex and violence plus loads of other stuff that they get pressured into doing when they really dont want to Robert Cormier wrote a widely controversial book called The Chocolate War His book has sparked many arguments among teens and adults especially adult parents He has expressed many different themes of individualism and peer pressure in The Chocolate WarRobert Cormier was born in French Hill Leominster Massachusetts in 1925 He was the second of eight children He went to school at St Celicas Parochial Grammar School Robert was a big book reader and writer throughout his life and in seventh-grade one of his teachers read one of his poems he had wrote and after class she told him he was a writer So from then on that was what he called himself a writer When he was in eighth-grade he watched his house catch fire and burn down His teachers would not let him leave to go see if anyone was inside until he said the requisite prayers It enraged him for many years afterward When Cormier went to college another teacher read one of his stories he had wrote and sent it to a magazine without Cormier knowing and it became Cormiers first published work After college Robert Cormier started traveling around the world and has visited almost every state in the US He went on a trip to Australia and dipped his hand in the Indian Ocean that thrilled him beyond measure In 1974 Cormier published The Chocolate War the novel this is still a bestseller a quarter century after its publication and it was also the object of censorship attempts because its uncompromising realism In a front page review in a special childrens issue of The
