When deciding which high school I wanted to attend I had two options Chicago High School for the Arts a new college preparatory high school that focused rigorously on the arts and De La Salle Institute an all-girls Catholic high school Both schools were drastically different I grew up going to acting classes and spending my Saturdays at auditions so I automatically assumed I would attend ChiArts After a tough auditioning process I was accepted into ChiArts To everyones surprise even my own I chose to attend De La Salle Till this day I still wonder if I made the right decision Attending a high school with no emphasis on the arts restricts students in their ability to grow whereas performing arts schools have a healthy balance between academics and the arts If high schools without a performing arts department added courses of the arts in their curriculum students would learn more at school other than the traditional academic courses and the performing arts courses would expand the creativity of the students Attending a high school that does not offer courses focusing on the arts is restricting Students have no way to express their creativity and express themselves while learning the anatomy of the human body Performing arts schools have the perfect balance of academics and arts By not only focusing on the core curriculum they allow students to immerse themselves in creative courses that still challenge them which helps them substantially more in the long run Most performing arts schools require auditions to get into the school not academic tests The schools focused on the arts will accept students with low grades as long as they show talent in a specific area whether it be photography theater etc They are willing to work with any student that may be academically challenged and through their art courses can help them become a better student academically In Linda Nathans article All Students are Artists she
