Describe two of the most formative experiences from your spiritual pilgrimage that have helped define you as a person disciple and servant of JesusFamily history is a powerful shaper I grew up in a blue collar non-practicing Catholic home I have a Canadian mother and an American father There is no doubt that my upbringing has given shape to who I am and who I am becoming in Christ But the single most influential shaper of who I am has been our middle son Our middle son has schizophrenia He is 31 years old and lives on his own but he is permanently disabled He has been our greatest teacher Schizophrenia may be the least understood and the most feared of the mental illnesses At the very least it is probably safe to say that it is highly individualized and unpredictable The unpredictable element of this illness has taught usme to rely differently on the sovereignty of God We my wife and I have been stretched in ways we could not have imagined as a result of our care for Brent Learning how to choose has given powerful definition to who we are and who we are in Christ We cannot ultimately control what emerges or unfolds around us but we can choose how we will respond WeI have made mistakes and there have been many difficult days But I believe my commitments run deeper I think I am more thoughtful in my actions I am more patient I listen more intently I have learned not to sweat most of the small stuff I have become better at sorting out the essential from the important and I have gained an understanding of limits as a result of the gift of our middle son I have also acquired a new appreciation for the formational power of suffering Romans 53-5 Day by
