When one thinks of areas of scientific study sexual research is not often the first topic that comes to mind For a scientist to have a specific interest in this area this can cause others to pass judgment on their purposes and potential perversions What the majority of society does not realize is that sex is scientific and has laid out many questions waiting to be answered by those brave scientists able to gain funding and volunteers while ignoring the skeptics In Mary Roachs book Bonk she examines the history of sexual research as well as the different approaches to sexual pleasure and desire Throughout the book she explains the physiology of sex as studied by previous researchers as well as her own research in an effort to explain the scientific nature of sex in the context of everyday relationships In many ways Roach is a large proponent of the physical nature of sexual response and often establishes that these physical factors are a major part of the way humans respond to sex However other literature as well as some of Roachs own points actually argues the opposing position that non-physical factors have a greater impact on how humans sexually respond Bonk with its focus on previous research chronicles the history of sexual science for its readers This allows the reader to understand how science and ways of thinking about sex have changed over time As sex became less taboo in society scientists were given more freedoms which Roach explains for the reader in great detail Such scientists as Kinsey and Masters focused on the physiological response to sex This way of thinking demonstrates how physical factors determine how humans respond to sex by exhibiting that biology plays a large part in sexual interactions As Kinsey discovered peoples earlobes swell when they are aroused and the membranes which line the nostrils may secrete more than their usual amounts of mucus Roach 2008 p 35 These
