Liquid Propane and Natural Gas are used by people all over the United States every day Propane and Natural Gas are similar in ways for which they are used for home heating water heaters cooking drying and even pool heaters Even though these two gasses are used for the same purposes they both have very different physical qualities when it comes to compression heaviness and energy One of the first physical qualities of both these gasses is that propane be compressed and transported unlike natural gas Propane can be compressed because it turns to liquid at around -46 degrees which allows it to be carried in portable tanks These portable tanks are filled with propane and are most commonly used for barbeque grills Natural Gas cannot be compressed as easily so you cannot use it as portable gas The second physical quality of these two gasses is the weight Propane is heavier than air and air is heavier than natural gas Because propane is heavier than natural gas if it was released in the air it poses a greater threat for an explosion than Natural Gas Since propane is heavier than air it tends to fall to ground and settled whereas Natural Gas is lighter than air so it tends to rise and dissipate posing a less threat of an explosion Both Natural Gas and Propane will both dissipate into the air if they are released in a very open area They both pose an explosive risk if they are concentrated enough and ignited
