After the civil war life for the free African American was terribly challenging because African Americans were treated unfairly violently and were given stereotypes that did not fairly portray African AmericansAfrican Americans were treated unfairly after the civil war even though the law had changed and stated that they were equals Many white people still had not adapted to equality between all people and still thought of African Americans as animals not humans In many states African Americans were paid less for doing the same job as white people In Mississippi African Americans made 342 dollars compared to whites who made 1107 in Louisiana African Americans made 828 while whites were making 1685 and in Alabama African Americans were paid 661 and the whites made 1154 for the same type of job In all of these cases there was a huge gap in the amount of money made and times were already tough for African Americans but making almost half of money they should be making made it almost impossible to pay rent buy food clothes and all the other necessities The only reason that African Americans made less money for the same job barely getting by was because of the color of their skin African American people were treated so unfairly that in many cases it had become unbearable to stand it anymore Henry Mcneal Turner being one of these people suggested that himself and all the other African Americans move back to Africa since he could not stand the unfairness of America In his writing Back to Africa he writesThere is no manhood future in the United States for the negro He may make out an existence for generations to come but he can never be a man He spends the rest of his story explaining the problems of everything in America If African Americans are suggesting that they should leave America basically a paradise compared to Africa and go back to where
