This weeks readings consisted of a variety of ailments and the cross-cultural correlation between treatment options of those ailments or in some cases lack thereof An Anthropological Perspective on Obesity looks to examine the causes of obesity and how it translates amongst cultures The article describes obesity in evolutionary terms and then proceeds to depict how obesity is defined in a cultural context reflecting both its negative and positive sense depending upon the cultures point of view regarding fatness Culture Scarcity and Maternal Thinking Maternal Detachment and Infant Survival in a Brazilian Shantytown examine the role of poverty in infant mortality The piece also discusses the cultural significance of parenting within the referenced community and how it too could be a contributing factor to low infant survival rates Ethnomedical Beliefs and Patient Adherence to a Treatment Regimen A St Lucian Example discusses how personal belief systems that are influenced by culture effects whether or not a person abides by various treatment options assigned by medical professionals in order to prevent or treat an ailment Lastly Why Does Juan Garca Have a Drinking Problem examines the prevalence of alcohol addiction amongst Puerto Rican men The article also provides discusses the implications of alcohol abuse and prominent health related illnesses as well as the impact the addiction has upon the social aspects of the culture Although all of the aforementioned articles provide excellent examples of the many topics to explore within medical anthropology I will closely examine Nancy Scheper-Hughes discussion as it relates to infant survival argumentResearch has shown a strong correlation between poverty and infant mortality rates universally In addition to these parallels parental bonding in the form of attachmentdetachment parenting has also been shown to have an impact upon infant mortality rates Lastly research has attempted to depict that mental illness exhibited by either parents or caregivers can also have an effect upon infant mortality rates The focus upon mental illness is
