In Harper Lees southern gothic novel she displays the prejudicedviews of many residents in Maycomb Alabama From To Kill a MockingbirdLees novel portrays the struggle of Scout Finch trying to understandthe world around her and the ways of the prejudiced citizens of MaycombScout is able to determine the different prejudices that people facethroughout the novel those being social racial and gender prejudices A type of prejudice is social prejudice Social prejudice is displayedthrough the way the citizens of Maycomb view the Cunninghams and theEwells The Cunninghams are dipicted as being poor but proud peopleAlthough the Cunninghams are considered proud they are still consideredbeneath the more prominent citizens and viewed a certain way ScoutFinch proves just how the Cunninghams are viewed when she makes the moveto explain why Walter Cunningham cannot except the lunch money from theteacher by saying Miss Caroline hes a Cunningham Lee 26 as ifthat is the most obvious answer Though the Cunninghams are viewed lowthe Ewells are lower in the eyes of the Maycomb residents The Ewellsare people that are viewed as a family that continue to be looked downupon in their community because of their actions and social status Atticus said the Ewells had been a disgrace to Maycomb for threegenerations 40 so this makes it easy to see how all the people lookedat them Their living conditions are horrible they live behind thegarbage dump their house roof consisted of tin cans and the windowsare open spaces with cheesecloth filling that space in the summertimeBesides the Ewells appearance they were basically above the law thechildren were able to never go to school and they could hunt out ofseason So the community consider them right above the Negroes which isas low as a white family can goAnother type of prejudice is racial prejudice Racial prejudice isillustrated through Tom Robinson being convicted of raping MayellaEwell The accusations make it to trial solely because Robinson is ablack man and Ewell is
