Throughout recent years the rates of childhood obesity have risen exponentially to the degree that it is now regarded as a global epidemic which proposes serious medical as well as financial challenges 1 As cited by the Institute of Medicine 2 since 1970 the rates of childhood obesity in the USA have more than doubled whereby 45 million children are obese and 9 million are overweight This increase is not culture bound as several longitudinal studies have shown a growth in obesity in multiple countries particularly Brazil China and Russia 3 As outlined by the International Obesity Task Force IOTF obesity is defined as a medical condition whereby ones body mass index BMI exceeds 30 Kgm 3 This holds multiple health implications as obese children are at a higher risk of developing chronic medical problems such as cancer type 2 diabetes amongst others which highly reduce a childs quality of life and life expectancy 2This essay will examine the primary causes which have accounted for the great increase in childhood obesity It will particularly pay close attention to the available treatments of obesity such as exercise and healthy diet and their overall rate of effectivenessMultiple social as well as environmental factors have contributed to the increase in obesity such as the increase in food advertisement targeted at children and the greater availability of fast food restaurantsHowever the most important of these is the decline in physical activity as well as global shifts in dietary habits A report by the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention CDC cited in 2 found a 30 decline in physical activity in schoolchildren in the last decade Nowadays childrens leisure time is primarily centred on multimedia particularly TV which accounts for more than 3 hours a day 23 This means children now spend increasingly less time undergoing vital exercise which is beneficial to their health 2 As a result children are now significantly more at risk of developing obesity related
