I am an Asian heterosexual female atheist and a non-native English speaker in the United States In my opinion privilege is something people can take advantage of to protect equal rights based on their certain identities such as race gender and social class It could be conscious or unconscious Oppression is the deprival of equal rights when some identities like race gender and social class are the effect factors Oppression is becoming more unconscious because of some stereotypes people hold for long and their neglect of the changing situation in todays society One identity that privileged me is my sexual orientation Being a heterosexual enables me to legally marry with someone I love no matter where I am Also I can openly talk about my relationship with my spouse without worrying about if the conversation will make some people feel uncomfortable An example in my life is about my friend As a straight I can freely associate with any people of my gender However being together with people of the same gender can sometimes be hard for one of my gay friends He told me that other guys would perceive him as a girl that doesnt fit in the guys group What is more other guys are very afraid of that my friend would have feelings for some of them As a result my friend has to hang out with girls who can share everything with him In this situation I have the privilege to choose friends of any gender without getting people to doubt my motivation My heterosexual identity makes me spend more time with friends who share the same sexual orientation with me Because I realize that being a straight is more acceptable among my family and community members The identity that disadvantaged me is my gender Being a female sometimes means differential treatment It sometimes also limited my job option because some jobs are considered to be mens job especially in
