Although fewer than 6 percent of American adults will have a severe mental illness in a given year according to a 2005 study more than a quarter each year will have some diagnosable mental disorder Mental illnesses are medical conditions that disrupt a persons thinking feeling mood and ability to relate to others in daily functioning situations Poor mental health causes an increase in violence aggression suicide disruptive behaviors oppression and discrimination Some say that mental illnesses can be overcome but is this true in such an oppressing society Mental illnesses can affect people of any age race religion or income The causes of mental disorders are generally complex and vary depending on the particular disorder and the individual Although the causes of some mental disorders are unknown it has been found that different psychological and environmental factors can all contribute to the development or progression of a mental disorder Most mental disorders are a result of a combination of several different factors rather than just a single factor Within the African American community the race as a whole suffers from social and economic statuses that affect their mental state dramatically Since psychology is the science of behaviors and mental process finding out if our human traits develop through experience or are we born with them Its difficult for African Americans to relate to other races biologically and socially to express intelligence and personality because of the influences of the environment and hereditary For example the African American community and how they are portrayed as a whole Why is black portrayed as bad and why is white portrayed a good Where did this originate from From the start of the Americas African people have been stripped of their country heritage and culture and forced to conform to the standards of the European man In most humans interpolations Africans are categorized as uncivilized ignorant and incapable savages Even after the Emancipation Proclamation was formed slaves still
