The people of Qiugang long of someone to stand up and lead them Everyone in the village wants a better environment but nobody wants to step up and take charge of the operation Yang Lennon Yale These are the feelings shared by the vast majority of the impoverished people in the world who have no political power Like in Gary Indiana the poor people in these neighborhoods cannot afford to move away from the pollution to make a change happen or even to simply voice their opinionDuring rare occurrences these peoples voices are heard In 1970 the levels of mercury in the water in Minamata reached 2110 ppm There were 121 victims of Minamata poisoning and 46 people were dead Tsuchimoto Higashi 2011 The mercury in the water was not only affecting the people of Minamata but it was affecting the fish who called the water home The cause of this poisoning in the water as all of the villages knew was a result of a chemical factory recently opened in Minamata the Chisso Corporation Soon enough the fishermen realized that if Chisso continued producing chemicals and releasing their waste in to the water they would not be able to sustain a livelihood because nobody would want to buy their fish anymore On November 2 1959 4000 angry fishermen and their families broke in to Chisso attacked employees and destroyed the belongings of the company Chisso is a country with a total profit of over 400 billion yen Since 1960 they have invested a mere 348 million yen Tsuchimoto Higashi 2011 With this enormous difference in earnings and spending it is clear that The Chisso Corporation has the funds necessary to lessen their impact on the environment The strange thing is that they have not done so When you look back at history including US Steel in Gary Indiana however it no longer seems strange This is the way that big businesses run They are
