The province of Quebec was one of the earliest European settlements onthe North American continent Quebec It has played a significantrole in helping to shape Canadas history but in the past centuryseveral substantial factors had contributed to Quebecs need separatefrom Canada To begin with the Quebecers were often treated withoppression and disrespect by the English-speaking majority in Canada asa result they never truly felt like Canadians Secondly Quebec is asociety that possesses its own distinct cultural and linguisticidentity It derived from a French society that prided itself on itslanguage culture heritage and values Last of all in the latterhalf of the twentieth century Quebec did not then and has not sincesigned the constitution Quebec It was excluded from thesupreme law of the country Couville and its special status withinCanada was not recognized Hence it is clear that Quebec needs toseparate from Canada in order to protect the distinct national identityit possessed since its birth In the first place Quebec must separate because its people were oftentreated with political and economical oppression in the past century An evidence of this would be the conscription crises that nearly tornthe country apart Couville In World War I only 60 of conscriptedFrancophones reported for duty Taylor 7 and in World War II over 85Quebecers voted against the conscription Couville As a resultmany escaped into the woods or left the country entirely Taylor 7 Quebecers have always seen themselves as a distinct nation withinCanada Couville and felt no reason to fight for the EnglishCanadians The federal government never negotiated with Quebec beforeissuing the conscriptions Couville it never recognized the fact thatits people felt exploited about being forced to fight in the wars Theonly way for Quebecers to be safe of English oppression was to become anindependent state Rocher For the same reason in 1917 JNFrancoeur a member of the Quebec National Assembly Taylor 9encouraged the Quebecers
