College can seem like a race In a race the runner is trying finish under qualifying time place first and look desirable for recruits In college we strive to finish in four years work to be first in our class all while trying to look desirable for future employers But before we can begin to think about competing we have to learn how to clear the first hurdle The race is never just one hurdle in length there are multiple hurdler college will bring For instance we may struggle on declaring a major deciding on a school picking a career or any of the other obstacles we could be with For some of us this hurdle might be a breeze others will stumble in the beginning but improve overtime and finally there are those who have no choice whether to participate or not Every year my alma mater Shikellamy High Schools Track and Field coaches organize a freshmen orientation to introduce the incoming class to the sport All 9th grade students and their parents are encouraged to attend Coach Evans the head coach believes that pre-season is an essential step to a successful season Equally important to the training in the off season is the selection of the appropriate event that utilizes each individuals talents For each event Coach Evans introduces the coach explained what it entails and what skills are required concluding with a demonstration from the upperclassmen mentor I watched from the stands I noticed there was a large turnout of freshmen but only a select few were accompanied by their parents Coach Evans separated the program into three sections run jump and throw He concluded with the running events First the sprints followed by distance and concluding with hurdles Following the brief introduction of the program the freshmen broke up into by event and began their first practice There were five freshmen who chose to pursue hurdling They watched Katelyn
