Citation Ya-Ling Tsai and Shang Hui-Fang The Impact of Content-Based Language Instruction on EFL Students Reading PerformanceAsian Social Science63 2010 77-85Academic Search Complete EBSCO Web29 Sept 2011This research study revolved around content based instruction and its effectiveness as a method in EFL teaching learning settings The main focus of this study was to investigate the impact of CBI method on EFL students general and academic reading comprehension Another focus for the study was examining the relationship between students proficiency levels and the improvement of general reading capability The participants were a group of 101 English major students in a university in Taiwan The students had received a formal English instructions for at least seven years However students reading levels varied from advanced to low levels based on their TOEFL reading scores Students received 100 minutes of content based instructions peer a week for 14 weeks Four short stories and one poem were used as reading materials The researchers used different strategies to collect their data such as reading stages general and academic reading comprehension test and interviews The results of the study showed a significant difference between students score before and after the study in terms of CBI impact on students general and academic English reading comprehension ability Also the results of the study revealed a strong relationship between students proficiency levels and their test scores However the low level students showed the greatest improvement in their test scores compared to the higher levels From my point of view this study had some limitations in terms of participants English background because all the participants have the sufficient literacy to do well in the study I think that the study would turn more accurate results if it was conducted on a group of students other than English major Also I believe that receiving 100 min of language instructions peek a week is not a sufficient time to ensure students reading comprehension growth However This
