Reality television programs typically portray a radical type of lifestyle that is far from the norm The characters in these shows are usually women with incredibly thin body types that fit the Barbie stereotype Reality television has recently become extremely popular in todays society and has a huge influence on the populace that watches them If the stars of these shows portray exceptionally skinny bodies as attractive do the people who watch them think they need to look like this too to be perceived as good-looking It is almost physically impossible to achieve this body type without taking extreme measures Extreme measures such as starving oneself or regurgitating consumed foods are two ways to attain a super thin build I predict that people who watch at least one thin-promoting Reality television show are more likely to develop an eating disorder than people who do notConsidering Reality Television is somewhat new to society there have not been many studies done on this topic However there have been multiple studies on the effect of television and media on body thinness A particular study was done in South Australia asking high school girls about their body dissatisfaction BMI drive for thinness and an inventory of television programs they have watched The outcomes were not surprising to me as the researchers broke down the results particularly to the types of television programs the participants watched Tiggerman and Pickerings 1996 study found the followingIn particular body dissatisfaction was significantly positively correlated with watchingsoap operas or serials and movies and negatively correlated with watching sports Drive for thinness was correlated with time spent watching music videos Stepwise multiple regressions showed soaps and sports to predict body dissatisfaction and music to predict drive for thinness pg 201As you can see programs such as soap operas had an impact on the girls body dissatisfaction and music videos increased their drive for thinness The women portrayed in soap operas and music videos compare undoubtedly
