Henry Louis Gates Jr seemed as if he were bewildered by the thought of his father allowing another man to all him out of his name There are many pros and cons to standing up for what you believe in but Mr Gates father didnt seem to be too shocked at Mr Wilson calling him George but it seemed to have taken his son by surprise Though his father responded with He calls everyone George Gates didnt seem to understand why his father would allow this man to call him another name besides the one he was given as a birthright but his father not reacting or responding in a negative manner was simply a way of retaining his dignity and pride since his family was already in a better position than the name he was just called I understand Gates wanting his father to stand up for himself because Ive gone through that with my father when I was a child He had a tendency to not call me by my name and always called me boy Overtime I began to resent that term and its something that has stuck with me even nowIn relation to Gates father I can see how hard it is to respond to someone not calling you by your rightful name though thinking things through before taking action As a child I gathered the same thoughts and had to choose whether or not to make the same decision I chose to tell my father that I was tired of him calling me boy even though that was what I am To have your name stripped of you is just as bad as having no name at all and I was also afraid at first to tell my father of how I felt in fear of there being a repercussion Though it took a while before I could actually stand before my father and tell him that I was tired
