If there was one thing I would take with me from Stephen Kings On Writing A Memoir of the Craft it would beIf you want to be a writer you must do two things above all others read a lot and write a lot Page 145 This one sentence sparked me back to reality and made me realize that even if I was never going to become a writer writing was needed to function And if I were to function well then I better prepare myself by changing the way I educate myself The book On Writing may not have been the ideal example of how to write but it did give me hope that this year would be filled with more exciting books than in previous years I didnt agree that the foul language was needed or that all 291 pages were important To me if the only part of this book was the On Writing part I would have been contempt Actually if the book was only the one sentence that made me realize the simplicity of writing I would be perfectly fine with that After all from that one simple sentence I learned that my entire life I have been taught English incorrectly All the SAT words in the world spelling quizzes tests and soapstone charts couldnt do what reading a lot and writing a lot can do Reading teaches us grammar spelling vocabulary complex sentences simple sentences plot tone and everything else that a textbook is supposed to do only it makes it enjoyable to learn Writing teaches us how to put these things into our own work through example and teaches us how to have conversations and how to share stories facts or thoughts Writing in its simplest form is when Words create sentences sentences create paragraphs Page 135 So if Stephen King can make writing seem so simple and fun why cant educators today put this into
