When you hear the sound you can easily sense the inner peace of the performer Within the music is a cool hopefulness that both calms and inspires the listener The syncopated rhythm rings of coastal derivation yet you sit in a crowded smoky bar listening to the ostentatious drivel of a wasted college student hopelessly mimicking the true art of the original genre Reggae has what is now seen as the archetypal Jamaican sound The warmness of the music finds its American soul with the mindless stoners and surfer dudes who croon out-of-tune along to the stories of hope peace and understanding Now in the dimmed bar you curiously scope around you to find the all-white faces of the audience bobbing passionately along to the waves of verse that wash away from the microphone Each song brings only a slight reminiscence of the only true artist to arise from this genre He is Bob Marley and he is now rightly labeled the king of reggae holding his own legendary spot among the greatest figures of the music industry To the natives of Jamaica he is a prophet spreading the spiritual messages of Rastafarianism to a wider and more mainstream audience Strangely enough to this nodding audience around you he is the Messiah embodying a mindset of love and compassion told entirely through his venue of catchy choruses This audience knows not the story of the music they only find themselves caught up in the glossy lyrics and easy beat The dont know the story of the country of Jamaica a land built entirely on slavery to the point where blacks began outnumbering whites by a 201 ratio For more than 100 years after being freed the natives fought hard for their independence from the British which they finally received in 1962 In 1963 Bob Marley formed The Wailers and reggae music became Jamaicas newfound tool to spread their joy of freedom around the world And
