Two standards have recently surfaced for signaling and control for Internet Telephony One is ITU Recommendation H323 and the other is the IETF Session Initiation Protocol SIP These two protocols indicate very different approaches to the same issue H323 relates with the more traditional circuit-Switched approach to signaling based on the ISDN Q931 protocol and earlier H-series recommendations and SIP favors the more lightweight Internet approach based on HTTP IntroductionIn order to provide useful services Internet telephony requires a set of control protocols for connection establishment capabilities exchange and conference control Currently two protocols exist to meet this need One is ITU-T H323 and the other is the IETF Session Initiation Protocol SIP The former is a ITU recommendation and has evolved into an umbrella of specifications for packet based multimedia communication systems H323 is based on the Q931 ISDN protocol and as such it embraces a traditional circuit switched approach SIP on the other hand is a IETF protocol which aims at providing equivalent services through a simpler and more lightweight web based approachH323H323 is a ITU recommendation based on the H320 family of standards H323 is based heavily on the ITU multimedia protocols which preceded it including H320 for ISDN H321 for BISDN and H324 for GSTN terminals The encoding mechanisms protocol fields and basic operation are somewhat simplified versions of the Q931 ISDN signaling protocol The current version of the recommendation is version 4 1 Initially the protocol version 1 was designed to provide service provisions However in is current state it has evolved into an umbrella of specifications that define the complete architecture and operation of a multimedia conferencing system over a wide area packet network In contrast to its original scope it has become a scalable solution that can be interworked with managed large scale networks H323 is a standard that specifies the components protocols and procedures that provide multimedia communication services real-time audio video and data communications over
