Zora Neale Hurston was born on January 7 1891 in Notasulga Alabama she later moved with her family to Eatonville Florida The community was the nations first incorporated Black Township She had a somewhat good childhood until her mother died when she was only thirteen years old At twenty-six years old she had not finished high school so she took ten years off her age and finished high school For the rest of her life she would say she was ten years younger than she actually was Hurston never received the financial rewards she deserved the largest amount she ever received was 94375 When she died of a stroke in 1960 her neighbors had to take up a collection for her funeral and it was not even enough to pay for a headstone Hurston used her background in anthropology and her experiences from her childhood in the South to create the dialogue in her stories Their Eyes Were Watching God took place in Eatonville Florida and the Everglades In Eatonville Janie was married to Joe That was the place she felt most confined neglected That is where she learns to deceive others She works very hard and does not get the recognition she deserves In the Everglades is where she is comfortable living out in nature with Tea Cake The Everglades make Janie realize that she does not need to have the finer things in life to be happy The Civil War was over slavery was dying down and the blacks in the South were establishing independent communities also known as race colonies Eatonville became the first black townDifferent artists paid tribute to the original band usually by singing their songs in this era A popular song from 1937 was They cant take that away from me by Fred Astaire httpgroovesharkcomsearchqtheycanttakethatawayfrommefredastaireThis photo is a picture of the type of car that some of the more wealthy people would drive This is a photo
