By the end of the story A Good Man is Hard to Find one might think that the grandmother was the innocent one and the Misfit was the evil one But there is more to the story than meets the eye When the Misfits henchmen took the rest of the family into the woods to execute them the grandmother was left with the Misfit While the grandmother was conversing with the Misfit she seemed indifferent about the fate of the others she only cared about herself The resolution of the external conflict between the grandmother and the Misfit showed their true colors During the conversation between the grandmother and the Misfit he said I call myself the Misfit because I cant make all I done wrong fit what all I gone through in punishment OConnor 124 He also said that he wasnt a bad person when he was young but he got sent to a penitentiary He was accused for killing his father but he knew for a fact that he was not guilty of that crime He remembered that his father died from the epidemic flu yet he was still blamed for it It was after that incident when he started to become a criminal He reasoned that the context of the crime didnt matter one could kill a man or steal a tire but would forget what one had done and get punished for something that one didnt even remember doing However the grandmother only responded in regard to herself She said to him Youve got good blood I know you wouldnt shoot a lady I know you come from nice people Pray Jesus you ought not to shoot a lady Ill give you all the money Ive got OConnor 124 This showed that she only cared for herself she remained apathetic to what would happen to the others Even though her son Bailey tried to console her by telling her that he
