The Idea of Representation in Cultural Exchange

This is a research paper about Edward Said and his academic field of postcolonial studies. While Said was a literature professor, his work on Orientalism remains relevant in the Western world's relationship with the Middle East. One of Said's primary concepts is that of representation. According to Said, representation substitutes real experience and knowledge with a perceived reality, which tends not to be the truth. This representation impacts the West's relationship with the Middle East, mainly English, French, and American. Part of this act of representation is reducing the Middle East to nothing more than Islam and Arabs.
