IntroductionIn the United States the prevalence of childhood obesity continues to be a major focus in healthcare Approximately 17 of US children are considered obese Ogden Carroll Kit Flegal 2012 The complex condition known as obesity is primarily associated with the imbalance between poor eating habits and low levels of physical activity This imbalance along with genetics and environmental factors contribute to obesity Obesity is defined by age and gender specific Body Mass Index BMI and is measured by body fat Barlow 2007 Many aspects of a persons life are impacted by obesity including physical psychological social and economic status Li Hooker 2010 There are several co-morbidities associated with obesity and the most prevalent were type II diabetes cancer and cardiovascular diseases The co-morbidities were found in people who were overweight and obese with the severity greater for those individuals who were obese Guh et al 2009The risk factors and problems associated with adult obesity are becoming more prevalent in overweight and obese children Brophy Rees Knox Baker Thomas 2012 Obesity and poor physical fitness combined create a toxic environment where children are overeating and not receiving the activity time appropriate for their age As the youth continue to deal with these problems they are faced with a future of insulin resistance type-2 diabetes abnormal blood lipids and hypertension Boddy et al 2010 The children who are overweight now are more likely to be overweight when they enter adulthood Shaya et al 2008Childrens bodies are constantly growing and changing and todays children are not receiving the adequate exercise they need and are expected to have shorter lifespans than their parents Williams 2013 Children who do participate in physical fitness activity programs when overweight or obese show greater loss of body fat increase in cardiovascular fitness and improvement in fasting insulin levels when compared to overweight children who do not Carrel
