Abstract This study was undertaken in order to analyze the possible reasons for the heterozygosity value difference between the two Western Diamond-backed Rattlesnakes populations in Phoenix Arizona area separated by the highway and housing construction To do this we obtain microsatellite data generated from the two Western Diamond-backed Rattlesnakes populations in Phoenix Arizona area and then calculate the observed heterozygosity value of the two populations using the Doh heterozygosity calculator and finally we did a t-test for the heterozygosity values of the two populations to determine if there is a significant difference in heterozygosity value between these two snake populations According to the t-test the northern snake population has a higher heterozygosity value than the southern snake population There may be several factors that contributed to this result such as nonrandom mating including inbreeding and outbreeding genetic drift and gene flowIntroductionIn those years people invaded a huge amount of wildland for expanding the city doing farming practices and constructing highways However people may ignore that the invading to those wildland may have some effects on the genetic structures of populations living in these areas Those changes of genetic structures may have negative effects on populations such as increasing genetic disorder lowering the birth rate causing the loss of immune system function etc Sometimes the change of genetic structures may directly threaten the survival of populationsSome people already noticed the significant impact on genetic structures of populations after people invaded their habitats and try to analyze how human activities affect their genetic structures In some cases after people invade other populations habitat Human activities are able to influence the genetic structure of populations by preventing gene flow between populations In the village of Kikwawila because of the irrigation done by human Bulinus globosus a species of a tropical freshwater snail was inhibited considerably to be spread Marti However in other cases human activities probably also promote gene flow among populations and that also changes their genetic
