I met Johnson on a tour visit to a community-based childcare center CBCC in the small total village of Khuruvi district in Malawi As the CBCC coordinator he warmly greeted and took me then a consultant for Save the Children into a small brick building where 30 young children were singing and dancing in a big circle Johnson a man in his mid-thirties with a big smile and humbleness reflected on his face instantly struck me as a man of integrity by the way he gently assisted the children He has been volunteering at the CBCC for the past two years working with the children As one of the most educated young men in the village Johnson led and managed 10 volunteers of the CBCC A father of a 3-year old boy himself and a guardian of six orphaned children from his wifes side of family his gentle and caring way of working with children made his love for children evident Two years ago his village constructed the early childhood learning center with the help of Save the Children With no universal early childhood education available in Malawi this was the only place where children between the ages of 3-6 can come to learn the alphabets numbers and how to play with other children The CBCC had 10 volunteers who came to volunteer at the center two to three days a week to work with the community childrenSave the Children along with other international NGOs such as Catholic Relief Services and CARE has been working with different rural communities to empower them to establish CBCCs and provide care for the vulnerable children of the community The CBCCs are funded by the donor agencies like the USAID the World Bank and foundations like the Conrad Hilton Foundation The core mission of the CBCCs as laid out by the NGOs is to build the capacity of the local communities
